If I'm ordering for one general electrical crew, I choose the 107. Most of what a tech needs is a trustworthy voltage check, continuity, and a compact size. Save the 87V budget for two or more 107s.

- Test the tester on a known live source.
- Test the target.
- Test the tester again on the known live source.
Why the third step? Because if the tester is faulty and says "dead" when it isn't, you don't get a second chance. You catch it by checking after the test. That's the confirmation check from our safety audit.
The other lesson came from a communication failure on my watch. I said "we need testers for the crew." The person heard "any tester will do." Result: a CAT II meter showed up on a 480V panel job. We now require an IEC 61010-1 category rating on every test-equipment P.O. A Fluke 107, for example, is rated CAT III 600V. That matters.

I've bought a used portable generator. I've never bought a used multimeter for a crew member.

If you're tempted by a used Fluke 107 for a personal kit, ask for calibration or repair records. If there aren't any, treat it as a mystery box. I like mysteries. Not with voltage testers.
7. What about when the budget says "buy cheaper"?
