When someone asks whether a Fluke multimeter is worth it, I don't give a one-word answer. The comparison depends on three things: what you're measuring, how much a wrong reading costs you, and how long you'll own the meter. Let's look at those as dimensions, not as a brand sermon.

The easiest reason to hesitate is the price. But I stopped looking at sticker price after my second year in procurement.

For example, the Fluke 73 III multimeter price on the used and refurbished market is usually around $85 to $130. I checked online reseller listings in January 2025, so verify before you buy. That's not cheap, and it's not the $300 to $500 people imagine when they hear 'Fluke.' A used Fluke 73 III is a compact, honest carry meter. It won't do everything a current 87V does, but it's a fair entry into the Fluke world.

If you work on high-energy circuits every week, a Fluke multimeter is probably worth it. The 87V is still the workhorse on our trucks. But you don't need to start with the 87V. A used Fluke 73 III at $85 to $130 is a fair entry, especially if you're a smaller shop or an independent technician.

I also have a soft spot for small buyers. When I was starting out, the vendor who took my $120 order seriously kept my business for years. Today, the same vendor handles our larger orders. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential. If a distributor treats a one-meter order like a nuisance, find another distributor.

If your work is mostly low-energy electronics, don't let me talk you into a Fluke just because it says Fluke. A budget meter with clear CAT ratings and a published spec sheet is a legitimate option. The brand isn't the safety system; you are.

Part of me wants to tell everyone to buy a Fluke. Another part remembers the handful of cheap meters that taught me more than any premium meter did. I reconcile it like this: buy the best meter for the worst circuit you expect to touch. That's the cost-controller's version of 'buy once, cry once.'

Whatever you pick, write the model number, purchase date, and calibration status in a spreadsheet. Future you will thank present you when the invoice needs to be justified.
