Short answer: yes, it’s worth it. But not for the reason most people think.
People think Fluke meters cost more because they’re a premium brand. Actually, Fluke can charge a premium because they’ve earned a reputation for reliability over decades. Every Fluke model from the 115 upward includes it. The assumption is that “true RMS” is a fancy feature. The reality is it’s a safety net for modern electrical systems.

The Fluke 177 is a solid middle-ground meter—it’s a 170 Series model with true RMS and a 6000-count display. Good for commercial electrical work, facility maintenance, and a lot of troubleshooting. It’s not as rugged as the 87V, and it lacks the low-pass filter, but for most everyday tasks it’s more than capable.
I bought a 177 for my personal kit in 2020. It worked fine for about two years, and then I dropped it from a ladder (my fault). It still works, but the display has a quirk. I’ve kept it as a backup. (Note: Fluke’s warranty is industry-leading at 3 years, but dropping is not covered.)
7. I need to diagnose a fuel pump on a Dodge Charger Daytona. Help?
You’re likely checking voltage drop and resistance at the pump relay. A Fluke is ideal here because you need precision. Use your meter to check voltage at the pump connector while the engine is cranking. If you see less than 11V, you have a wiring problem, not a pump problem.
I was helping a buddy with his Daytona last year. Every spreadsheet analysis pointed to a dead fuel pump. Something felt off—the relay clicked cleanly. I measured voltage drop across the relay contacts with my 87V. Found 0.8V drop. Replaced the relay, problem solved. Saved him $800 for a pump he didn’t need.
8. I’m installing a new electrical outlet. Can I use any multimeter for this?
You can use a basic meter for a simple outlet install. But here’s the thing: you’re dealing with live circuits. A Fluke 115 (or even a 101) will give you clear, safe readings. The safety rating matters—CAT III 600V is standard for household wiring. I learned never to assume a meter’s safety rating after a cheap meter I used in 2019 arced on a panel. (It didn’t fail catastrophically, but it scared me straight.)
For a standard outlet, you’re checking:
- Voltage between hot and neutral (~120V AC)
- Voltage between hot and ground (~120V AC)
- Voltage between neutral and ground (< 2V AC)
That last check is critical and often skipped. A high neutral-to-ground voltage means a loose connection or a shared neutral. (I’ve caught two burnt neutrals this way.)
9. Should I buy a used or vintage Fluke to save money?
Tempting. I’ve seen vintage Fluke 77s for $60 on eBay. But here’s my rule: unless you can verify calibration, don’t risk it on critical work. I bought a used 87 in 2018. Looked fine. Turns out it had drift in the resistance range. The numbers said it worked. My gut said something felt off. I sent it to Fluke for calibration—cost $110. Total investment: $170 for a meter that was 20 years old. I could have bought a new 115 for that.
If I could redo that decision, I’d buy new. But given what I knew then, it seemed reasonable. (I still keep it as a shop beater.)
10. Last question: what’s a mistake you see rookie techs make with their first Fluke?
Using the wrong input jack. Seriously. The common port is for voltage, resistance, and frequency. The 10A port is for current only—and only for high-current measurements. I’ve seen two techs blow the fuse in their meter by trying to measure voltage with the leads in the 10A jack. (There’s a loud pop, and a $15 fuse to replace.)
