A Fluke Multimeter Buyer's Checklist for Mobile Generator Mechanics

If you keep a multimeter in a service van, you know there's a difference between a meter that lives on a clean bench and one that survives the back of a truck. I run procurement for a 14-person mobile generator service company. Over the past six years, I've reviewed every tool invoice and watched our techs go through enough testers and test leads to fill a drawer I don't like to think about.

This checklist is for a specific person: the mobile generator mechanic who needs to check generator output, trace a dead battery charger, and test a contactor without driving back to the shop. It's not for lab calibration. It's not for hobbyist breadboards. It's for field work where a 12 V battery and a 240 V generator panel share the same afternoon.

Start with the job list, not the catalog

It's tempting to think a multimeter is a multimeter. You measure voltage, current, resistance—done. That simplification misses the real issue: the meter gets thrown into a steel drawer, used as a make-shift pry bar, and still has to read accurately when the customer's generator is dead.

I've also seen the opposite mistake. A shop buys the biggest, priciest Fluke because "we're professionals." Then it sits in the drawer because nobody wants to risk a $700 meter on a grimy alternator. That's wasted budget too. The question isn't "which Fluke should we buy?" It's "which Fluke matches the measurements we actually take?"

Step 1: Separate jobs into quick checks and real measurements

Sit down with your techs and list the measurements. For a mobile generator service truck, the list usually looks like this:

  • Generator output voltage and frequency
  • Battery voltage and charging voltage
  • Contactor coil resistance and contact condition
  • Cordless battery charger output
  • Continuity checks on wiring, fuses, and sensors

Now be honest about which jobs need a full multimeter. Many "is this wire live?" questions can be answered with a compact tester. That's where the "Fluke pen multimeter" category comes in. If you search "Fluke pen multimeter," you'll mostly find compact voltage testers like the Fluke T6-1000. It fits in a shirt pocket and does the go/no-go voltage check without dragging your main meter around the genset.

Do not use a pen-style tester for resistance or coil measurements. It's not designed for that. It's a quick-check tool. For actual diagnostics, use a full meter.

Step 2: Match the Fluke 17B+ multimeter specs to the job

For about half of our service vans, the "actual diagnostics" tool is the Fluke 17B+.

The Fluke 17B+ multimeter specs that matter to us are true-rms AC voltage and CAT III 600 V protection. Those two features matter when you're measuring generator outputs with motor drives and other non-linear loads. A non-true-rms meter can read low on distorted waveforms, sending a good tech after a problem that doesn't exist.

I'm not saying the 17B+ is the only meter you'll ever need. If your people do heavy 480 V panel work with high fault current, step up to a higher CAT-rated model. But for a mobile generator service van, a CAT III 600 V meter with true-rms is usually the right balance.

Check the current specs before ordering. Product lines don't change every week, but accessories and leads do. I looked at Fluke's documentation in January 2025; you should verify the model number on their site before you send the PO.

Step 3: Ask for the total cost, including calibration and warranty

Here's something vendors won't tell you upfront: a "calibration certificate" can add real money to an order. If your customer contract requires a calibrated meter, fine—buy it. If you need a field meter, don't pay for a cert on every unit. Buy one calibrated reference meter and keep the rest as field tools.

Last year, I compared quotes for a small batch of meters. The numbers said go with the cheaper vendor—same model, about 9 percent lower. My gut said something was off. They kept adding fees: packing, processing, "expedited documentation." The final invoice came out above the standard distributor. The problem wasn't the meter. It was the hidden cost model.

This is where my buying rule comes in. Ask "what is NOT included?" before you ask "how much?" A supplier who lists every line item—meter, leads, shipping, warranty—is the one I trust. A supplier who quotes a low number and adds fees after the PO is telling you how the rest of the relationship will feel.

Step 4: Stock test leads and fuses before you need them

You know what actually fails on a truck meter? The leads. Not the electronics. The leads.

If you don't order extras at the same time as the meter, a broken lead means a dead meter sits in a toolbox while the replacement ships. I keep two spare sets of leads and a set of alligator clips in inventory. That's it. Not a full calibration lab—just the parts that wear out.

What most buyers don't realize is that the meter isn't the true cost. The real cost is test lead replacement, blown fuses, and the labor hour lost when a tool doesn't work. The Fluke 17B+ uses standard-style leads, so I can get replacements quickly. The fuse holder is also easy to reach. That reduces the total cost of ownership. Make sure whatever model you order has accessible, standard consumables.

Step 5: Use the meter to answer 'how does a contactor work' before replacing it

Every generator tech eventually faces a contactor that doesn't pull in. A contactor is a heavy-duty relay: a coil pulls contacts closed, and that lets power flow to a load. The practical question is which half failed.

  1. De-energize and verify zero voltage. Lock it out, then use the meter to confirm no voltage at the contactor. This is the non-negotiable step.
  2. Measure coil resistance. Put the meter in ohms and read across the coil terminals. Compare to the value on the contactor label. An open coil means the contactor won't pull in.
  3. Manually close the contactor if possible. With power still off, use continuity mode to check each set of contacts. A closed set should show near zero resistance.
  4. Re-energize and measure voltage drop. With the contactor closed and a load drawing current, measure from line side to load side on each pole. Excessive voltage drop usually means pitted contacts.

That's the practical version of "how does a contactor work": it's a coil, it has contacts, and you can test both halves with a multimeter.

One caution: contactor coils are not all the same. Some are AC, some are DC. Set the meter to the right mode before measuring. The meter won't get annoyed, but the reading will be wrong.

Step 6: Diagnose the cordless battery charger before you blame the battery

This is the check that saves us the most money. A tech comes back from a job convinced a battery is dead. The battery won't charge on the shop charger, so it gets tossed. Later, someone notices the charger pins are bent and the charger output is zero. That's an expensive mistake.

Test the cordless battery charger with the multimeter before you condemn anything. Plug the charger in, set the meter to DC volts, and touch the output terminals. Check the label for expected voltage. If you get nothing, verify the charger's input voltage. If input is good and output is zero, the charger is the problem.

Do the test under load, too. A charger can show correct voltage with nothing connected, then collapse when it has to push current. Put a drained battery in the charger and measure the terminals. A healthy charger holds close to the rated voltage under load. A weak one doesn't.

Oh, and don't trust "it just needed conditioning." I've replaced too many batteries that were fine and too many chargers that were broken. A 30-second voltage check ends the debate.

Common mistakes on generator service trucks

Buying one meter for everything. The back of a truck is not a clean bench. Use a compact voltage tester for quick checks and a full multimeter for diagnostics.

Skipping the leads. I said it once, I'll say it again: the leads are a maintenance item. Stock them.

Testing a contactor coil without looking for an open. If the coil is open, cleaning the contacts won't help.

Testing a charger with no load. A no-load reading can be normal while the charger fails as soon as the battery asks for current.

Assuming the product line hasn't changed. Fluke's site and your distributor's price sheet should be checked against your inventory list every year. It takes fifteen minutes.

That's the checklist. Start with the job list, respect the safety specs, and remember that the meter is only part of the tool cost. The leads, the fuses, and the supplier's willingness to be transparent on the invoice matter just as much. Done.
